Director James Gunn describes The Suicide Squad as a gritty, 1970s war movie with comedic elements. Gunn was selected to direct and write the film after Disney cut ties with him over old controversial twits. This stirred backlash from fans and the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Disney later rehired Gunn to direct and write Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The Suicide Squad is the sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad from 2016. The movie was a box-office hit and earned more than $740 million worldwide, but it was hated by critics across the board and was one of the worst-reviewed films of 2016.

Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Margot Robbie returns as the incredible Harley Quinn. Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney are also reprising their roles from the first film.
A new addition to The Suicide Squad is John Cena as Peacemaker, an ends-justify-the-means vigilante. Peacemaker will have his own prequel series on HBO Max. Sylvester Stallone is the voice of King Shark. The cast of The Suicide Squad also includes Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Alice Braga as Sul Soria, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Michael Rooker as Savant, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Sean Gunn as Weasel, and Flula Borg as Javelin.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released on Aug. 6 in theatres and on HBO Max.
